What should I look for when trying to choose a lawyer?

Your lawyer will be helping you resolve your problems, so the first qualification is that you have to feel comfortable enough to tell him or her, truthfully, all of the details necessary to resolve your problem. No one will be able to tell you which particular lawyer will be the best for you; you must judge that for yourself.  This is why selecting a real estate lawyer to help with a commercial real estate transaction can be time consuming and difficult, however with some basic questions to ask, your task of choosing the attorney should be easier to handle.

Once you have identified a handful of lawyers who might suit your needs, try to set up an initial consultation on the phone so you can ask some preliminary questions before you commit yourself to a formal, in-person interview. To help you with your final choice, it might also be a good idea to write down any answers you get for a quick comparison later on.

Some initial questions you might ask include:

• If the lawyer charges for an initial interview, how much is it? How long does initial interview or consultation last?
• What type of fee arrangement does the lawyer need? Can you negotiate the fees?
• Has the lawyer handled comparable cases? When was the last time the lawyer handled a related case?
• Is the lawyer licensed to practice in your area? How long has the lawyer been practicing in your area? Has the lawyer been investigated or disciplined before by state licensing authorities? If so, for what?
• What form of information should you take to a conference with the lawyer?
• Will the lawyer handle the case or will others work on it also?

Your next step is to make an appointment with a lawyer to discuss the case in detail. During the initial interview you will likely be asked about your case. In order to prepare for the meeting, you should gather all the information (documents, contact information) pertinent too your situation.
